One of my favorite things to do when I travel to is explore some of the smaller hidden gem cities, outside of the main busy cities. Whether you want to explore the outdoors, or beaches, or national parks, this day trips from Sydney guide will help you to plan your day trip itinerary with ease. Now, let’s dive in!

1. Blue Mountains National Park
If you love the outdoors, then one of your day trips should be to the Blue Mountains National Park. This National Park is about a 2-hour drive from Sydney and offers amazing rock formations and is ideally a great place to visit at sunrise or sunset. I personally enjoyed hiking the Giant Stairway, which takes you into Jamison Valley. Other attractions in the area that you need to sea are the Scenic Railway, Skyway and the adorable town of Luera. The landscapes in are breathtaking and is a great way to connect with Australia’s natural and beautiful landscapes. My visit to Luera was great as well and I had the opportunity to stay and enjoy a cup of coffee, do some people watching and explore some of the shops in the town.
2. Royal National Park
Another great National Park to add to your itinerary is the Royal National Park. This National Park is located south of Sydney and is a nature lovers paradise. It is Australia’s oldest National Park and houses a very diverse ecosystem. One of my favorite spots in this park was Wattamolla Beach. We brought everything we needed to have a picnic and found a great spot near the waterfall. If you choose to hike the Coast Track, you will have amazing views of the cliffs and secluded beaches, which are all great photo opportunities.
3. Hunter Valley
If you are a wine connoisseur, then you need to ensure you visit Hunter Valley. This is about a two-hour drive north of Sydney and well-known for its vineyards and gourmet offerings. You are able to sample various wines, stroll through the vineyards, and visit local cheese shops as well.
4. Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park
Another amazing National Park to add to your itinerary is the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. This park is located on the coast and is about 2.5 hours north of Sydney. This is a great spot to see marine life, visit the sand dunes, and do some hiking. On my Tomaree Head Summit hike I had incredible views of the water and was even able to spot out dolphins jumping out of the water with my binoculars. This National Park was one of the prettiest I visited on this trip and highly recommend that you visit as well.
5. Palm Beach
Just an hour’s drive north, Palm Beach offers golden sands and a relaxed atmosphere. Fans of the TV show “Home and Away” might recognize the locale. I’ve hiked up to Barrenjoey Lighthouse, where the views of the coastline are breathtaking. The nearby cafes serve excellent brunch options, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely day out
6. Southern Highlands
A 90-minute drive southwest brings you to the picturesque Southern Highlands. Towns like Bowral and Berrima exude old-world charm. During spring, the Tulip Time Festival in Bowral showcases vibrant floral displays. I’ve also explored Fitzroy Falls, where the cascading waters amidst lush greenery provide a serene backdrop
7. Hawkesbury River
Northwest of Sydney lies the tranquil Hawkesbury River. I’ve taken the Riverboat Postman cruise, which delivers mail to river communities—a unique experience blending history and scenic beauty. The surrounding areas offer opportunities for kayaking, fishing, and exploring colonial-era towns like Windsor.
