For the past 20 years or so, I have traveled to over 47 countries, across 6 continents, including most of the islands in the Caribbean. As someone who has been to nearly every island, I was honestly shocked by how much I loved Barbados. It was just the amazing beaches, endless sunshine, or clear waters; it was some of the excursions that I did while I was here that were the highlights of my trip. If you are into snorkeling with turtles over shipwrecks, postcard beaches, amazing sunsets, reggae music, and everything in between, then Barbados is the place for you. In this guide, I will be diving into all of the amazing things to do in Barbados and why you need to add these to your itinerary.
Introduction: Things to do in Barbados
I feel like every time I leave Barbados; I find myself not ready to go and just telling myself I need more time! Barbados is known for so many things, from its white-sand beaches to its clear water, luxury hotels, amazing food, and welcoming locals. Whether you are staying in Barbados for a weekend, a week, or two weeks, there are so many things to do in Barbados. In this guide, I will walk you through all of my favorite things to do on this incredible island, which will ensure you have a memorable trip.
1. Carlisle Bay, Barbados: Swim with Turtles
I think one of the most memorable experiences that I had in Barbados was snorkeling at Carlisle Bay with turtles! This was my first time snorkeling with turtles, and it was absolutely amazing to watch them swim around. The water here is super calm and clear, and I felt like I could see down to the ground for miles. I was able to snorkel over a shipwreck, which was also my first time doing that, and I literally just floated along the top of the water for what felt like hours.
If you are a solo traveler like me, then being out in the mornings is the best time. There are usually fewer crowds and tourists out, the sun is a little cooler than the middle of the day, and the water just feels calm. Remember to always use reef-safe sunscreen and bring your phone waterproof protector so that you can capture some incredible photos and videos of your experience.
2. Explore the East Coast & Bathsheba
If you need a change of pace and you want to enjoy some calmer vibes, you can either rent a car or take a tour to visit the east coast of the island and Bathsheba. The waves in this area are spectacular and are known to the surfers in the area as “soup bowl”.
Now, the drive to this area was quite the adventure all in itself. The roads are very windy, but you can enjoy views of cute little local villages, the sugar cane fields, and as I had my windows down, I could smell the salt in the air, which I honestly love.
For lunch, I ate at this super cute cafe on the cliff (I wish I could remember the name of it) and just enjoyed the scenery and calming vibes of this area of the island. If you have the time and opportunity, I would absolutely add this to your itinerary, as you won’t regret it.
3. Barbados Botanical Gardens
One of the most rejuvenating things I did was spend a morning at the Flower Forest Botanical Gardens in Saint Joseph. The light in that forest, through palms, tropical trees, with orchids and ferns around, is healing. I also visited Andromeda Botanic Gardens inside Bathsheba, where the gardens feel close to the ocean breeze, and every path invites you to slow down. If nature calms your soul as it does mine, these gardens are gems.
4. Harrison’s Cave: Underground Wonders
For something completely different, I took a guided tour of Harrison’s Cave, and it was like entering another world. Underground streams, stalactites, stalagmites, and a tram ride weaving through illuminated caverns. The cave is very popular, so booking ahead helps. Also, wearing comfortable shoes and bringing a light sweater helped (it’s cooler underground!).
This was actually a great excursion to do in the summer, because it was a great escape from the heat, and I was actually pretty cold in there!
5. Bridgetown, Barbados
Bridgetown is where history and modern Barbados meet. I loved walking through the colonial buildings, exploring markets, enjoying street food, and visiting sites like the Garrison Savannah racetrack. It has beautiful architecture, vibrant local life, and I found that chatting with locals or joining a free walking tour gave layers to what I was seeing. The food, the connections, the rhythm—all of it made the city feel alive.
6. Barbados Beaches
You can’t come to Barbados without beach days. But one of the things I learned is to mix in less-trafficked spots. I loved hidden coves, secret beaches, and walking beaches like those along Rockley or on quieter sections near the east coast. Then there are moments like standing at Animal Flower Cave as the sun sets or watching waves crash over cliffs; those are the memories that stay. If you can, catch the sunset from a cozy spot and just relax and be in the moment.
One of my favorite beaches to come to when I am in Barbados is Crane Beach. Crane Beach in Barbados is one of those places that completely takes your breath away. The sand here has the softest pink tint, and the waves roll in with just enough energy to keep things fun while still being safe for a swim.
Conclusion: Things to do in Barbados
To me, Barbados is more than just another island in the Caribbean with amazing beaches and water. There is something about Barbados that stands out from the others. I don’t know if it’s the gardens, or the caves, the food, or amazing people, but in my eyes, Barbados is one of a kind. No matter what kind of trip you want to have, Barbados can accommodate and ensure that your visit is not the last. I hope this guide on the best things to do in Barbados has not only inspired you to want to visit but has also given you some insight into all that this incredible island has to offer.
