As somone who has been solo traveling for what feels like my whole life (I am aging myself now, but like 20 years). Over the years, I have grown to realize, as I plan my travels and my clients’ travels, that timing is indeed everything. Finland is one of those destinations where, depending on when you visit, you will have a completely different experience. In this guide, I will be going through, season by season, when the best time to visit Finland is, based on what you want to see and do.

Introduction: Best Time to Visit Finland

When my clients ask me when the best time to visit Finland is, my answer is, “Anytime is a great time!” Honestly, depending on what type of experience you are looking for, that will determine when the best time to visit is.

If you are looking for Northern Lights and snowmobiles, then winter may be the best time to visit, particularly if you want winter wonderland-type activities in Rovanneimi, for example. If you want markets, water activities, etc., then maybe summer is the right season for you.

Regardless of the time of year you visit Finland, you will truly have a magical adventure. Now, let’s dive into the seasons, so that you can pick the best time to visit Finland that is right for you!

When is the Best Time to Visit Finland: Season-by-Season

Summer in Finland (June – August)

Some may say that the best time to visit Finland, especially if you are a first-time visitor, is during the summer. I don’t necessarily agree. Now, don’t get me wrong, the summers in Finland are amazing. The temperatures are mild, the days are long, and it really feels like you have endless hours to explore.

This time of year is great if you are looking for outdoor markets and festivals, fun little cafes to enjoy while you sit outside with your coffee, and people watching. It’s also a great time of year to visit Porvoo and enjoy all of the outdoor activities and riverfront properties.

If you are looking for enjoyable mild weather, long days, with lots of sunshine, busy and lively cities full of events, festivals, and outdoor concerts, then the best time of year to visit Finland for you may be the summer.

Pro Tip: Summer is a peak season for Finland, so you may notice increased prices for hotels and flights, so budget accordingly.

Spring in Finland (April – May)

For me, spring in Finland feels like a gentle exhale from the winter. You will notice the snow slowly starting to melt, the rivers gently flowing, and the cities and towns slowly returning to the outdoors.

This time of year tends to be what I call the “shoulder season”, as it’s a bit more budget-friendly when it comes to flights and hotels. There are fewer crowds compared to summer and winter, and it’s nice to visit the museums, wander the streets, and enjoy cafes, with more locals around and fewer tourists.

If you are looking for a budget-friendly travel experience, with fewer crowds, and a season that allows you to enjoy a little bit of some of the winter activities (depdening on where you visit, you may see the Northern Lights) and a mix of summer acitivites (more outdoor excursions become bookable), then spring may be a great time for you to visit Finland.

Autumn in Finland (September – November)

In my opinion, visiting Finland in the fall or autumn is probably one of the best times of year to visit, and also one of the least busy times. Fall in Finland means leaves changing, the air starts to become crisp, the nights are much cooler, and it just starts to feel super cozy.

This is a great time of year to visit Finland if you enjoy nature, love taking photos of the fall foliage, and are looking for cooler weather, but not frigid weather. This also tends to be a less busy time of year, so you can snag some great travel deals and still have an opportunity to see the Northern Lights during this time of year as well.

Pro Tip: The later in autumn you visit, the shorter the days and the temperatures will be starting to dark, especially in the evening.

Winter in Finland (December – March)

So, when I think of Finland, I think of winter wonderland and Northern Lights. And honestly, it’s all true. The snow-covered forests, the Northern Lights dancing in the sky, it really feels like you are in a real-life Christmas village.

Visiting Finland in the winter was a dream come true for me. There was something about the cold crisp air, that felt fresh and magical. I did have to break my “no checked bag” rule for this trip, due to the heavy clothing I needed to bring, but it was so worth it, that first night I saw the Northern Lights above me from my room at Apukka Resort.

If you are pondering visiting Finland in the wintertime, do it! Yes, you will be cold, yes you will have a magical experience, and yes you can visit one of the nearly 3 million saunas in Finland to warm yourself back up. The cold is worth it. Trust me!

Pro Tip: December and January tend to be busy months, so plan accordingly and opt for later in January or early February to beat the crowds.

Conclusion: Best Time to Visit Finland

One of the things I love most about Finland is that regardless of the time of year that you visit, you will have such an amazing experience. Between the midnight sun in the summer, to the Northern Lights in the winter, Finland has something for every traveler and for every season. I hope that this seasonal Finland guide has helped you decide when to visit Finland, and that you have the same magical and amazing experiences that I have had visiting this incredible country.
