When I started planning my trip to Prague, I don’t think that I quite realized, that it was a city that I could literally spend weeks visiting. And not just the city itself, but all of the towns and places outside of the city that only make visiting Prague even better.
Some of my best travel memories from my trips to Prague actually are from when I left the Old Town behind for a day. I think you gain a lot of historical knowledge and you can see a lot of the “must-sees” in capital cities, but you always don’t get to see everything about the country’s culture, and how the locals live, until you take a day trip from the city. There is something about leaving the hustle and bustle of a busy, but incredible city, to take a moment, breathe, and see the other side of the country in a very true and authentic way.
In this guide, I will be diving into all of my favorite day trips from Prague that I loved most, told the way I remember them: the smells, the staircases, the little mistakes I made (so you don’t), and the exact insider tips that made each one flow smoothly for a solo traveler.
Introduction: Day Trips From Prague
Prague is seriously a majestic, incredibly, and gave me a gothic vibe, which I loved. Just like any busy city, there are lots of things to see, do, and experience. But one of the best things about visiting a new country or city, is also escaping that busy city life, to visit some of the smaller neighborhoods and areas outside of the city, where the locals live, work, and just immersions yourself in the culture.
In this guide I will dive into all of my favorite day trips from Prague, how to get there, safety tips, and lessons learned, so that while you are planning your trip to Prague, you don’t make the same mistakes I made, and your trip is amazing and seamless. Are you ready to visit all of the amazing places outside of Prague? Ok, let’s dive in!
1. Český Krumlov: A Fairytale Town with a Castle
If you have the time for a longer excursion, Český Krumlov is pure magic. The trip takes about
three hours, but it’s one of the most rewarding day trips from Prague. One of my favorite aspects of this cit is that the main part of town is full of colorful houses, you have the castle sitting above the river, and you could literally get lost in teh maze of cobblestone streets.
I’ll never forget climbing the castle tower and looking out at the Vltava looping around the town, the rooftops glowing in the evening light. While I recommend staying overnight if you can, I’ve done it as a day trip and still found it completely worthwhile. The key is to start early and pack light, because it’s a long but unforgettable day.
2. Karlštejn Castle
When you think of fairy-tale castles, Karlštejn is exactly the kind of image that comes to mind. This day trip is a nice and short train ride from Prauge, and actually, train day trips are my favorite, because I feel like you get such amazing views of the countryside on trains.
Here you can see how the castle rises dramatically over the countryside, and the walk up from the station takes you through charming streets lined with shops and taverns. If you are up for a nice workout, make the climb up, and I am not gonna lie, it’s pretty steep, but once you get to the top, the views are magnificant. It’s a very safe and easy trip to do solo, but do make sure to check the train schedule in advance so you don’t find yourself rushing to make it back.
3. Kutná Hora
Kutná Hora is one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips from Prague and is only about an hour train ride from the city. The Bone Church is haunting and fascinating, with its chandeliers and walls made of real human bones, while St. Barbara’s Cathedral is one of the most stunning gothic churches I’ve ever seen.
Wandering through the cobblestone streets, I found myself slipping into cafés where locals chatted quietly and felt completely at ease traveling solo. If you are adding this day trip to your Prague itinerary, a word of advice: get there as early as possible and wear sneakers as the streets are very uneven and it’s very easy to trip and fall.
4. Plzeň (Pilsen)
Plzeň is a fun and lively option, especially if you want something different from the usual castle or spa towns. Famous as the birthplace of Pilsner beer, the brewery tours are fascinating, and even if you’re not a big beer drinker, it’s worth learning how deeply beer is tied into Czech culture.
One of my favorite things to do, and you know this if you’ve read any of my other blogs, is to just walk around, get lost in the city, and experience all of the different paths and ally’s the cobblestones take me. I feel like you get such a different experience, and a more authentic experience doing this, and not having a plan, is sometime the best plan. The city feels friendly and manageable for a solo traveler, and it’s not as crowded as some of the more popular day trips from Prague.
5. Karlovy Vary
If you need a break from the busy city of Prague, then I would highly recommend that you add Karlovy Vary to your itinerary of day trips to visit. This is actually a spa town, and it’s the perfect place to escape, relax, and rejuvenate yourself from your busy travels. Being a solo female traveler, I love just wondering around, and here I tried some warm mineral water from the traditional cups, and even though it doesn’t sound necessarily appealing, I was shocked at how good it was.
Since this is a spa town, I knew I had to treat myself to a spa session, as I do on my trips, and it was exactly what I needed after all my traveling. I was able to reset, and relax, which is always needed on busy trips. If you are planning a visit here, please pack your swimsuit and a towel, because you will want to take full advantage of the thermal baths that are available.
6. Terezín
Terezín is one of the most powerful and emotional day trips from Prague. Visiting this former concentration camp was a sobering experience, and it reminded me that travel is about more than beautiful sights, it’s also about remembering history. As you walk through and hear about the stories, you will have this somber feeling come over you as you think about what happened here, how these people felt, and just the shear fear that went through the minds of those who were here.
This is a day trip everyone should add to their list, to learn about the history, pay your respects, and to give them a moment of silence just to honor those who didn’t make it out of the camp. My tip for your visit here is to wear sneakers, always have water, and just be emotionally prepared for how you may feel while you are here and after you leave. It’s not easy, but it’s important.
Conclusion: Day Trips From Prague
The beauty of taking day trips from Prague is that you don’t have to choose just one kind of experience. You can wander through gothic cathedrals in Kutná Hora, live your fairy-tale dreams at Karlštejn Castle, soak in spa waters in Karlovy Vary, and sit quietly with history at Terezín, all within a few hours of the city. As a solo traveler, I’ve always found these outings safe, rewarding, and full of moments that stay with me long after I return. So, if you’re planning time in Prague, make space for at least one of these adventures. They’ll show you a side of the Czech Republic that you can’t find within the city alone, and they may just end up being the most memorable part of your trip.
