As someone who has travelled to New York City close to a dozen times, I feel like I have experienced pretty much everything New York City has to offer, more than once. From all of my travels to NYC, I have curated the perfect list of all of the free things to do in New York City to make your budget-friendly trip to the Big Apple, much easier on your wallet. I have been able to discover some of the most amazing hidden gems in the city that most tourists don’t even know about. Now, let’s dive into all of the amazing free things to do in New York City so that your trip is as unforgettable (and budget-friendly), as mine was!

Introduction: Free Things to do in New York City

New York City is a year-round destination, and while many people flock to the city’s famous attractions like the Statue of Liberty and Times Square, there’s so much more to experience depending on the time of year. Whether it’s ice skating under the stars in winter, enjoying rooftop movies in the summer, or soaking in the vibrant colors of fall foliage in Central Park, there are so many unique seasonal activities in New York City that can make your trip even more special. This guide will walk you through the best seasonal experiences in New York City, helping you plan your visit around these unforgettable events and activities. Let’s get started!

1. Brooklyn Bridge Walk

Walking the Brooklyn Bridge early in the morning before the crowds, is one of my favorite things to do every time I visit New York. You can actually walk or bike on it, but my preference is to walk with a great cup of coffee from a bodega and just take in the calmness the city offers early in the morning and enjoy the amazing skyline that we all love about New York. The bridge does get busy if you go later in the day, but it is also fun to people watch if you don’t mind the crowds. If you start on the NYC city, head over to Juniors Cheesecake for a slice on the Brooklyn city as a fun reward before you walk back or take a cab back over to the city.

2. High Line & Hudson Yard

Another favorite thing to do in New York of mine is wandering around on the High Line. If you aren’t familiar with the High Line or you haven’t heard of it, the High Line is an elevated urban park that was transformed from an old freight rail line. This park is one of a kind with lots of wildflowers, amazing skyline views, and immersive park art. From here you can also stroll into Hudson Yards, where you can admire the Vessell and grab a bite to eat from one of the local vendors. This area is such a hidden gem in my opinion and a great place to relax and soak in New York’s park culture, all for $0.

3. Staten Island Ferry

If you are looking for amazing views of the Statue of Liberty skyline, then skip the Circline Line Harbour Cruise and hop onto the Staten Island Ferry. This free 25-minute ferry ride glides right past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, offering you amazing views of both the iconic statue and the New York City skyline. This is the best free boat ride in the city to give you those incredible views you came to the city to see. If you are looking to actually visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island up close and experience a tour, this one is one of my favorites – Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island Tours.

4. Central Park

Central Park is one of those parks in New York that I can literally visit every time I come and visit. Whether it’s renting a bike and taking the bike trails around the park, wandering through the park and just getting lost in the people and landscape, or findings an area to relax and read a book. There is honestly so much going on in Central Park that as many times as I have been here, I feel like I still haven’t seen it all.

There are enormous amounts of open green space to relax, lots of fun little trails to explore, and beautiful gardens to see. If you are looking for any Central Park excursions, I would recommend a Pedicab, a walking tour, or renting a bike and exploring on your own (renting a bike is my favorite. It’s super cheap and I can stop when and where I want).

5. 9/11 Memorial

I have visited the 9/11 Memorial a few times now, and every time I go to pay my respects, I just have this wave of emotions. You can walk around the fountains for free and feel the power and trauma this this day left on the world. I have also opted to visit the 9/11 museum a few times as well. There is a cost, but well worth the experience.

6. Washington Square Park & Bryant Park

One of the most energetic and lively parks in the city are Washington Sqaure and Bryant Park. These parks both have lots of street entertainers performing at any given moment. Whether it’s jazz, tap dancers, and soulful vocalists, the energy these parks bring is electric. Both of the parks are located int eh heart of New York’s creative pulse and the best part, the street entertainment doesn’t cost a dime (unless you through in tips)

7. The Great Saunter

Now, if you are feeling adventurous, wanting to get your steps in, and maybe work off some of that pizza and cheesecake, then you may want to add The Great Saunter to your list of things to do. The Great Saunter is a 32-mile walk around Manhattan’s shoreline and is honestly a bucket list experience, and maybe something you only do once. Even if you only do a portion of this walk, it allows you to see the city from a whole new perspective. And again, the best part? It is absolutely free and open to everyone!

Conclusion: Free Things to do in New York City

Visiting New York City doesn’t have to break the bank. From amazing skyline views, to visiting iconic places, free ferry rides, and getting your steps in, New York City has something for everyone and every budget. Whether you are planning a budget-friendly trip to the city or looking for some new things to do that doesn’t break the bank, I hope this list of free things to do in New York City allows you to have a memorable trip to the city, just as all of mine have been!
