From its picture-perfect beaches to the lush tropical surroundings, this resort offers a slice of paradise. Let me take you on a journey through my experience and share all the insider tips to make your stay unforgettable.

Introduction: Riu Guanacaste

Costa Rica is a country that has it all: breathtaking natural beauty, vibrant culture, and warm, welcoming people. Nestled on the Pacific Coast in the Guanacaste province, Hotel Riu Guanacaste captures the essence of this incredible destination. Whether you’re lounging by the pool, indulging in world-class dining, or exploring nearby attractions, this all-inclusive resort is a gateway to both relaxation and adventure. In this blog, I’ll guide you through everything you need to know about staying at Hotel Riu Guanacaste—from the luxurious rooms and delectable dining to the activities that await you just outside your door.

Hotel Riu Guanacaste: First Impressions and Arrival

When I first arrived at the Hotel Riu Guanacaste, I was immediately struck by the grandeur of the property. The resort is located in the Guanacaste region, right on Matapalo Beach, and surrounded by lush tropical greenery. The lobby alone is breathtaking, with its open-air design, towering ceilings, and elegant décor. Check-in was seamless and quick, which is always a relief after a long flight.

Pro Tip: If you can, arrive earlier in the day to have time to explore the property and settle in. The staff was very welcoming and accommodating (we changed our room for the last night) and their warm hospitality set the tone for the rest of our stay.

Rooms at Hotel Riu Guanacaste

The rooms at Hotel Riu Guanacaste are spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped with everything you need for a relaxing stay. I stayed in a standard room, which came with a balcony overlooking the gardens. If you’re looking to elevate your experience, opt for a room with an ocean view—you won’t regret waking up to those stunning views! The rooms are a bit dated if you are in the older towers, but honestly, we spent very little time in the rooms, so we weren’t bothered by it in the least. I was told the newer rooms are updated, but the newer tower is further away, and they also do not offer ocean views with those rooms.

Room Features:

  • Comfortable beds with plush linens
  • Mini-bar and drink dispensers (restocked daily!)
  • Modern bathrooms with complimentary toiletries
  • Air conditioning and ceiling fans to keep you cool
  • Free Wi-Fi (though it’s strongest in the common areas)

Dining Options at Riu Guanacaste

One of the highlights of staying at Hotel Riu Guanacaste is the food. This is an all-inclusive resort, which means unlimited food and drinks throughout your stay. With five restaurants on-site, you’ll never run out of options.

Must-Try Restaurants:

Liberia Buffet: The main buffet offers a variety of international cuisines. I loved starting my day here with a hearty breakfast of tropical fruits, pastries, and made-to-order omelets.

Furama Asian Restaurant: For dinner, Furama serves up flavorful Asian dishes. The sushi and stir-fried noodles were my personal favorites. This restaurant is all buffet-style, but the sushi and food was absolutely amazing! Try the Singapore noodles – you won‘t regret it!

Tucán—Steakhouse: If you’re craving something hearty, the steakhouse is a must-visit. The grilled steak and seafood dishes are top-notch.

La Toscana Italian Restaurant: Perfect for pasta and pizza lovers. I had the chicken with mushrooms entree and it was amazing. They also have a fantastic salad bar that includes soup, salads, and even pizza slices.

Ocotal—Poolside Restaurant: Ideal for casual lunches or snacks while lounging by the pool.

The bars scattered across the resort offer a range of cocktails, beer, and mazing mocktails. Don’t miss the swim-up bar at the pool!

Pro Tip: The specialty restaurants do not take reservations, and they open at 6pm, so make sure you get in line at 5:30/5:45pm to ensure you can get a table. The also frequently open 5-10 mins before 6pm

Activities and Entertainment at Riu Guanacaste

Hotel Riu Guanacaste is packed with activities for all ages. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or prefer to relax by the pool, there’s something here for you.

On-Site Activities:

Pools: The main pool is massive and features a swim-up bar (adult only). There’s also a separate kids’ pool for families and a water park.

Beach Access: Matapalo Beach is right at your doorstep. The water is warm and perfect for swimming or kayaking.

Water Sports: Enjoy complimentary activities like snorkeling, kayaking, and paddleboarding.

Spa: The Renova Spa offers a range of treatments to help you unwind. I treated myself to a massage, and it was heavenly, but I opted to not use the resort spa and use the local Costa Rician ladies on the beach just past the Palace resort.

Nightly Entertainment: The resort hosts live music, dance performances, and themed shows every evening.

Pro Tip: Skip the hotel spa and walk down the beach towards the Palace and experience amazing beach-side massage for $40-$50 for an hour. We saw Celeste and her partner, and they were both excellent!

For the Adventurers:

If you’re looking to explore beyond the resort, there are plenty of excursions available. Some of the most popular include zip-lining through the rainforest, visiting Rincon de la Vieja National Park, and taking a sunset catamaran cruise. The resort’s tour desk can help you book these experiences.

Pro Tip: Skip the hotel excursions and book with Frank-the-Tank. We did two full excursions: Unique Volcano and Magic Rainforest, and I can’t recommend them enough. Absolutely fantastic experience!!!

Tips for a Great Stay Hotel Riu Guanacaste

Bring Sunscreen: The Costa Rican sun is no joke, so make sure to pack plenty of sunscreen.

Bug Spray: While the resort does a great job keeping pests at bay, it’s always good to have some insect repellent on hand.

Get in Line for Dinner Early: The specialty dining restaurants onsite do NOT take reservations, so please make sure you plan ahead and get in line before 6pm.

Pack Light: The resort is casual, so you won’t need fancy outfits. Swimwear, sundresses, and sandals are your best bet.

Explore the Local Area: While it’s tempting to stay within the resort, Guanacaste has so much to offer. Don’t miss out on local culture and natural wonders.
