As a solo female traveler who has done a fair amount of island hoping, I have learned along the way that some islands are made for doing and some are made of Instagram. The Greek Island of Mykonos, in my opinion is both! There is no shortage of things to do in Mykonos, with most also being Instagram-worthy. In this guide, I will be diving into all of the things to do in Mykonos, based on my personal experiences, and sharing some tips and safety hacks that I have learned along the way.
Introduction: Things to do in Mykonos
Most may think about wild beaches parties when they think about Mykonos. And Mykonos is that. But it’s also so much more! From getting lost in the cobblestone city of Chora, to trying all of the amazing restaurants, Mykonos for sure has tons of things to see in do. Now, grab your pen and paper and let’s dive into all of the many things there are to see and do in Mykonos.
1. Chora: Mykonos Town
If this is your first time visiting Mykonos, I would highly recommend not only staying in the area of Chora but spend time exploring and wandering the cute cobblestone streets as well. There are lots of fun rooftops, cafes, boutiques, and lots of opportunities for photo ops, and to find some fun soviners.
This area is the heart of Mykonos, extremely walkable and a very safe area to walk both day and night. Chora is one of my favorite areas in Mykonos, and I hope after you have the opportunity to explore this area, it will be one of your favorite areas as well.
Pro Tip: If you can, try and explore this area first thing in the morning. The streets are less busy, and you can get some great photos of the cobblestone streets and allyways.
2. Little Venice Mykonos
One of my favorite areas to “escape” in Mykonos and just enjoy some quiet solitude and scenery is in Little Venice. This iconic and romantic neighborhood has fun, colorful houses, that remind you of Amsterdam, situated above the ocean, offering, what I feel are, the best sunsets on the entire island.
This is a great place to enjoy a nice evening stroll, enjoy the historic ambience, stroll the alleys, and just enjoy the incredible views that this area has to offer.
Pro Tip: In order to see the most amazing sunset, arrive early, especially in the summer, as it gets crowded.
3. Delos: Mykonos Day Trips
If you are looking to escape the island of Mykonos and want to do a fun day trip, then I highly recommend visiting Delos. This island is actually uninhabited and is famous for its archeological sites and is the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. If you are a history buff like me, Delos for sure needs to be on your itinerary.
I would recommend doing this Mykonos day trip with a guide so that you can learn everything there is to learn and know about the history of Delos. The site is only open April through October, so if you are visiting outside of that, you may not be able to visit.
Pro Tip: Bring a hat sunscreens and comfortable shoes for your visit.
4. Mykonos Beaches
Each of the Mykonos beaches offers a different vibe. I have outlined of my favorite beaches in Mykonos along with the beach vibe so that you can pick the right beach for you travel style:
Psarou: Psarou is the epitome of Mykonos glamour, where luxury loungers, designer swimwear, and celebrity sightings are part of the scene. It’s perfect for people-watching and indulging in upscale beach clubs like Nammos, with crystal-clear waters and a polished vibe.
Platis Gialos: Platis Gialos is a family-friendly beach with calm waters, plenty of restaurants, and easy access to other beaches via water taxi. It’s a great base for beach-hopping and offers a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere for all ages.
Elia & Kalo Livadi: These two beaches offer long stretches of golden sand and a quieter; more laid-back experience compared to the party spots. Elia is slightly more developed, while Kalo Livadi feels more open and peaceful, ideal for a slow afternoon with space to breathe.
Agios Sostis: Agios Sostis is raw and windswept, with no umbrellas or beach bars, just sand, sea, and silence. It was my favorite for a calm morning swim, where the only soundtrack was the waves and the occasional seabird.
Kalafatis: Kalafatis is the go-to spot for watersports, from windsurfing to jet skiing, with a more active and sportier crowd. It’s breezy and energetic, perfect if you’re looking to mix beach time with adventure.
5. Panagia Paraportiani
One of Mykonos iconic landmarks (other than the beach clubs) is Panagia Paraportiani. This church dates back to the 15th century and has incredible architecture. Panagia Paraportiani is located in Mykonos Town and is for sure something you need to see.
After visiting Panagia Paraportiani, I realized that Panagia Paraportiani is more than just a church, it’s honestly a masterpiece, with so much history and culture within it.
6. Mykonos Boat Day
One of my favorite excursions while in Mykonos, was my half-day boat day. I did an afternoon sailing (you can do mroning or afternoon), and it was just a fun experience to see Mykonos from the water, enjoy the Aegean Sea, and relax on the water.
We set sail for Mykonos’ south coast or to the mythical birthplace of Apollo on the island of Delos. I was able to relax at the beach, snorkel in beautiful turquoise water, and marvel at Delos’ ancient archaeological site.
Pro Tip: Make sure you come thirsty and hungry, because food and drinks are included!
7. Food in Mykonos
The food in Mykonos, and just in Greece in general, is absolutely amazing. I am pretty sure I gained 10lbs while on this trip, but it was worth every bite. There is something about the spices, the feta, the herbs, the street gyros, that are all just amazing.
Make sure you pick restaurants off the main walkways, look for menus without pictures, and avoid the restaurants with employees on the streets trying to get you to come inside. Look for the restaurants filled with locals, and you will be golden.
8. Mykonos Nightlife
Now, if you came to Mykonos to experience the nightlife, then you will not be disappointed. Paradise and Super Paradise are known for their incredible beach club parties with popular DJ’s that are keeping the party going from day to night.
The biggest beach clubs in the area are Cavo Paradiso, SantAnna, and Scorpios vibe. But if you are looking for something a little tamer, stick to some of the “quieter” rooftops in Chora, that still offer great music, but with a calmer vibe.
Conclusion: Things to do in Mykonos
Visiting Mykonos, was by far, such an incredible experience. Between the mix of beach clubs, historical sites, and amazing food, there is no shortage of things to do in Mykonos. I hope that this guide has given you some amazing ideas that you too can add to your itinerary, so that you have the same amazing experience in Mykonos, that I had.
