Planning a trip to Singapore and wondering “is Singapore safe to travel alone to“? If so, then I am here to tell you, yes! It is one of the safest countries in the world, if not the safest. When I first started looking Singapore as an addition to my Bali trip, the first question I am always on a search for is if that country is safe. And not just safe, but safe for solo female travelers. I am here to tell you, if Singapore is on your list, and you are a solo traveler, then you absolutely can visit Singapore freely and safely.
Now, let’s jump into my journey as a solo female traveler to Singapore and all the tips I learned along the way to ensure that I had a safe journey.
Introduction: Is Singapore Safe to Travel Alone
Currently, Singapore ranks 5th on the Global Peace Index (GPI) as the most peaceful and safest country in the world. IT ranks high on the list due to its low crime rates, super-efficient and safe public transportation, and very strict laws. Because of this, Singapore is a very ideal destination for all solo travelers alike.
My Solo Travel Experience in Singapore
Navigating the City
When I landed in Singapore at Changi Airport (which is incredible), I could immediately tell how clean, organized, and thoughtful Singapore was going to be. I have never had a better experience at an airport from navigating through the airport to the transportation system. Everything is seamless, efficient, and just incredible organized. The MRT public transit system couldn’t be easier to use. The color-coded transit system made it easy to navigate, with clear English instructions. I am also pretty sure I have never seen cleaner public transit in all of my travels.
I checked into Marina Bay Sands, and all I can say about this hotel is- wow! Once I got settled, I decided to explore around the hotel, and just how meticulous the airport was, everything in the system was exactly the same. I felt safe, it was clean, and the people were incredibly warm and welcoming. The people of Singapore are extremely poliet, the gave up their seats when someone eldery boared, and even getting on and off the train, no one was pushing or shoving anyone.
I had no issues walking around at night and never felt unsafe anywhere I went. I grabbed dinner in walking distance, saw the light show at Marina Bay, walked around the waterfront, and never once felt uncomfortable. Singapore is incredibly safe to travel alone to both day and night!

Exploring Neighborhoods
If you are planning a trip to Singapore, then one thing you need to absolutely add to your itinerary is visiting all of the various neighborhoods. Depending on where you are staying, all of the neighborhoods are either walkable or a quick and easy MRT ride away.
I spent one morning doing a bike tour, which was a great way to visit all of the neighborhoods and get a workout in. Pro tip: wear waterproof shorts! Singapore is incredibly humid, so be prepared to be wet and sticky after a ride or even a walk for the matter. We rode though the colorful streets of Little India, smell all of the amazing spices, and rode through Chinatown.
All of the various neighborhoods have something special to offer, see, and smell. Every corner I turned, something always smelled fresh and delicious!
In the afternoon I got an amazing tour from a local. We literally walked all over the city, looking at the murals in Kampong Glam, stopping at a Hawker to eat some amazing food, and just getting lost in the city.
Walking and riding around Singapore I never once felt unsafe or out of place. Singapore is an extremely walkable city, and again, the MRT is extremely easy to use. The city streets are busy, but not crowed, and the streets and city are immaculate. All in all, Singapore is honestly one of the safest places that I have ever traveled to solo, if not the absolute safest.
Interacting with Locals
Once of the friendliest people in the world are those in Singapore. I have been to over 45 countries as a solo traveler and I have never witnessed such politeness and kindness in all of my travels. I witness numerous times on the MRT folks giving up their seats for others, people don’t rush, push, and were always super helpful when I asked for directions.
One of the things that I love most about Singapore, is how culturally diverse the country is. Even though English is spoken everywhere, there are folks from everywhere. And when I say everywhere, I truly mean, everywhere. And even though it’s extremely culturally diverse, the fact that everyone speaks English, made it incredibly easy to communicate with people, ask for help, and as a solo female traveler, when you speak the same language, it helps set your mind at ease.
Singapore Solo Traveller Safety Tips
Keep Your Belongs Safe: Honestly, I never once felt like my belongings weren’t safe. Even in the major touristy sites, I kept my crossbody in front of me, took at my phone, and walked around, not once feeling unsafe or worried that phone or bag would get snatched. As always, be mindful of your surroundings, stay alert, and enjoy everything Singapore has to offer.
Singapore Laws & Customs: Singapore has some of the strictness laws of any country, and because of that, the country is incredibly safe. I know we’ve all heard the “no chewing gum on the streets” rule. Please review and be mindful of the laws and customs in Singapore to ensure you don’t endure any hefty penalties while on your trip. Smoking in public places is not permitted in many areas, and make sure you don’t eat or drink while on any public transit.
Public Transit: Singapore has some of the safest, cleanest, and most efficient public transit that I have ever been on. The MRT is very easy to use and is color-coded, making it easy for all tourists. You can feel safe walk around the city, even at night. But if you want to opt for Grab (Singapore’s Uber), you can feel safe doing so, and it works pretty similarly to Uber.
Stay Connected: Make sure you always share your itinerary and your location with any family or friends, so that they know you are safe. You can also download Google Maps offline so that you always know where you are going and without having to use your cellular data.
Singapore Accommodation Recommendations
When trying to decide where to stay in Singapore make sure you think about what you want to see and do, your budget, and ensuring you have quick access to things you need like food and entertainment. Below are some areas that I recommend staying at as a solo traveler in Singapore:
Choosing a Neighborhood: My recommendation on neighborhood is to stay somewhere central so that you can walk to as many things as possible and so that you have easy access to the MRT so you can get around. Areas like Marina Bay (which is where I stayed), Orchard Road, and Chinatown are all great and safe options.
Hostel/Hotel: If you are the type of solo traveler that wants to mee other fellow solo travelers, then the Pod Boutique Capsule Hotel may be a great option for you. I didn’t personally stay there, but I did meet a group at dinner who were staying there, and they loved how chic, safe, and budget-friendly the hostel was. If you want a hotel, your options are endless depending on your neighborhood. I stayed at Marina Bay, which was amazing, but there are countless other options depending on budget and where you want to stay. Reach out and I can help you narrow your search.
