After having traveled all over Barcelona and stayed in a variety of neighborhoods and hotels, I can honestly tell you that there is a neighborhood for every travel style and for every budget. Introduction: Where to Stay in Barcelona
Visiting Barcelona is like peeling back an onion. The city has multiple layers, and as you peel them back one layer at a time, you get so many various experiences. From medieval allys, to amazing beaches, fantastic foods, and lively neighborhoods, Barcelona has something to see and do around every corner. Depending on all of those things, picking the right hotel and neighborhood will enhance your entire trip. You want to pick a neighborhood and hotel that fits your travel style, your budget, is safe, and is close to things that are important to you.
Since I am a solo female traveler, I have based my picks around safety, walkability, and neighborhoods that I feel have the best vibe for the experience that I am looking for. In this guide, I will be sharing all of my favorites, what to plan for, tips, and everything I learned and why these areas and hotels are the best. Now, let’s dive into where to stay in Barcelona, so that you can pick the best hotel in Barcelona for you!
1. Eixample
One of my favorite areas to stay in when visiting Barcelona is Eixample. What I love most about this neighborhood is that it is super convenient to the city, it’s also a little quieter than some of the other neighborhoods, and the streets and buildings in this area really feel upscale and like a work of art (by Gaudí of course)!
This area is full of cozy hotels for all price points, and you can very easily walk to cafes, restaurants, shops, and public transit, which, for me, as a solo traveler, is extremely important. This is also a great area to get out and walk around in the morning with a great cup of coffee, and just enjoy the quiet streets before they are filled. This area is also calm and safe at night, because I for sure prefer the quiet streets when I am in my hotel, versus a noisy city center.
This area is great for those solo travelers looking for a safe, quiet, and centrally located neighborhood. This neighborhood is safe for families and first-time visitors, as it is very close to the subway and very walkable.
Best Hotels in Barcelona: Eixample
Hotel Jazz: Hotel Jazz is one of Barcelona’s most consistently loved mid-range hotels thanks to its modern rooms, rooftop pool, and unbeatable location near Plaça de Catalunya. It’s walkable to major sites and perfectly connected by metro, making it ideal for first-time or solo travelers. Clean, comfortable, and stylish without being overpriced.
H10 Art Gallery: Set in a chic, art-inspired building, H10 Art Gallery blends modern design with comfort. It’s surrounded by cafés, shopping streets, and Gaudí sights, giving you a stylish yet convenient base in Eixample. Their rooftop terrace is perfect for unwinding after a long sightseeing day.
Hotel Praktik Bakery: Hotel Praktik Bakery is famous for its warm, delicious aroma because the lobby is an actual artisanal bakery. Rooms are simple, contemporary, and well-designed, making it a fun and memorable stay. Guests love the cozy vibe, friendly staff, and the location near Passeig de Gràcia.
Pro Tip: If you like those quieter nights, ask for a room off the main street and a higher floor. You can thank me later!
2. Gràcia / Vila de Gràcia
If staying in an area that feels more residential and has a “local” type vibe, then Gracia and Vila de Garcia may be the neighborhood for you. It is a lot less busy compared to some of the other areas, and between the streets, plazas, cute cafes, and bakeries, it honestly feels low key and relaxing compared to other areas.
One of my favorite things to do in this area is grab a cup of coffee from one of the many local cafes, and just walk around the neighborhood, soaking in the vibes, and enjoy the little bit of quiet before the crowds and the town comes to life.
This area has a great balance between things to do during the day, quieter evenings, and is a great location for solo travelers, who don’t want the nightlife, or the couples and families looking for a safe and quieter area away from the tourist crowds.
Best Hotels in Barcelona: Gràcia / Vila de Gràcia
Radisson Hotel Barcelona 1882: This eco-chic hotel sits on the edge of Gràcia with quick access to the Sagrada Família. Its stylish interiors, rooftop pool, and wellness mindset make it ideal for travelers who want comfort in a calmer area. The neighborhood cafés and plazas truly make you feel like a local.
Casa Gràcia: Casa Gràcia is a boutique hostel-hotel hybrid with beautiful common spaces, artistic touches, and a warm traveler community. It’s perfect for solo travelers who want boutique style on a budget with opportunities to meet others. The location near Passeig de Gràcia allows easy movement around the city.
Aparthotel Silver: This cozy aparthotel offers spacious studios with kitchenettes—perfect for longer stays or travelers who want a “home base” feel. It’s tucked away in a quiet corner of Gràcia but just steps from the metro. Clean, bright, and well-loved by repeat visitors.
Pro Tip: Make sure you stay in a hotel that is near public transit so that you can easily get around versus always walking. Your feet will thank you later.
3. Barceloneta
If you are a beach bum like me or just enjoy adding a few beach days to your itinerary so you can recharge, then Barceloneta is a great area to stay in while visiting Barcelona. Between the nice sea breeze, the sunset or sunrise walks, the food, the sand, and the water, just makes for a perfect location.
My favorite things to do is wake up early, grab coffee, and just walk along the waterfront, enjoying the breeze, the water, and just taking the time to be in the moment, and enjoy the quiet, before the city fills up with people.
This area is perfect for those travelers who like a good mix of beach days and activity days, because you are close to some of Barcelona must-see activities, and close to the beach to enjoy some downtime as well.
Best Hotels in Barcelona: Barceloneta
Hotel 54 Barceloneta: A stylish, modern hotel with bright rooms and a rooftop terrace overlooking the marina. It’s perfect for beach lovers who still want quick access to the Gothic Quarter. Clean, simple, and ideal for a seaside city break.
W Barcelona: The W is Barcelona’s most iconic seaside hotel, standing like a shimmering sail above the beach. Stunning rooms, a world-famous pool scene, and Mediterranean views make it a true “destination hotel.” If you love chic, beachfront luxury, this is the spot.
Hotel Arts Barcelona: One of Barcelona’s sleekest luxury properties, located right on the waterfront. The rooms are spacious with floor-to-ceiling views, and the outdoor pool area feels like a luxury resort. Perfect for upscale travelers wanting both beach and city convenience.
Pro Tip: If you don’t mind skipping a sea view and want to stay in an area that may be a little less noisy, look for a hotel that is inland a bit. This gives you the convivence of the water without sacrificing your sleep at night. Or stay on the waterfront and ask for a higher floor room.
4. Gothic Quarter
One of my absolute favorite areas to stay in while in Barcelona is the Gothic Quarter. This is literally the heart of Barcelona in my opinion. Between the incredible cobblestones, the architecture, and the plazas, this is one area that I can never spend enough time in.
As a solo female traveler, I am very mindful in this area, as it is always very busy and a prime location for petty theft, like pickpocketing. It’s a very touristy area, but honestly safe to walk around, as long as you are mindful of your belongings. Stay aware and take a taxi or rideshare if you are out late, but otherwise, this is a great area.
This area is ideal for those travelers of all budgets and types, like history, nightlife, culture, and being in a very walkable area.
Best Hotels in Barcelona: Gothic Quarter
Hotel Barcelona Colonial: Located directly opposite Barcelona Cathedral, Hotel Colón offers some of the most iconic views in the entire city. Classic, elegant rooms and a rooftop terrace make it a favorite for photographers and history lovers. You step out the door and you’re instantly in medieval Barcelona.
Catalonia Magdalenes: This polished, modern boutique hotel blends sleek design with a peaceful atmosphere, which is very rare for the Gothic Quarter. My favorite part of this hotel is the rooftop pool overlooking the cathedral and the attentive service. It’s quiet at night but just steps from major landmarks.
Serras Barcelona: A luxury boutique hotel known for its Michelin-star dining and rooftop pool with harbor views. Serras offers an intimate, high-end experience in the Gothic Quarter while still feeling calm and exclusive. Great for couples, luxury seekers, and anyone wanting a refined stay.
Pro Tip: If you don’t stay in one of my recommendations above, please make sure you check reviews and pick hotels on the main streets for safety reasons.
5. El Poblenou & Sant Martí
If you want a mix of modern, beach-accessible, more local and less touristy, then El Poblenou or parts of Sant Martí can be amazing. On my last Barcelona stay, I met a couple of digital-nomad friends who lived here — cafés, relaxed energy, good public transport, and the beach only a short ride away. It felt more like living like a local than vacationing in a tourist bubble.
What I love: The balance — a bit quieter, a bit slower, but still connected. Great for longer stays or if you plan to work a few hours during your visit but still want access to beaches, good food spots, and easy metro/tram links.
Digital nomads, budget-conscious travelers, long-stay visitors, or those craving a low-key feel without losing access to the beach and the city.
Best Hotels in Barcelona: El Poblenou & Sant Marti
Hotel Ilunion Barcelona: A modern, airy hotel just a few blocks from the beach with large rooms and a rooftop pool. It’s great for travelers who want a relaxing base close to the sea. The value for money here is excellent.
Four Points by Sheraton Barcelona: Reliable comfort with modern rooms, great beds, and a fantastic breakfast. Located on Avinguda Diagonal with easy access to both Poblenou and central Barcelona. Ideal for business travelers, couples, and anyone wanting a comfortable, quiet stay.
Hilton Diagonal Mar: A polished luxury hotel next to a major shopping center and walking distance to the beach. Expect spacious rooms, a resort-style pool, and excellent service. Great for longer stays, families, or travelers who prefer quieter, modern neighborhoods.
